Tiny pieces of broken green glass lay around the fencing, glistening in the sun, and litter and pink chewing gum stuck to the bin and gate. The smell of dog urine whiffs as the wind blows and every now and then a young mother shouts, â€Å"don't stand in that it's dirty!† A small fat child sits on his own, indulging in a huge ice cream, smothered with a dark brown chocolate source and sprinkles the colours of the rainbow. He wipes the ice cream from around his mouth with his grubby little hands, smearing mud across his face, another child kicks a ball at him and knocks his treat from his hands†¦A loud cry and the child's mother comes slowly plodding over, her huge waste bouncing from side to side. Whilst all the little kids play, thuggish looking teenagers barbarically kick bins over and shout at the top of their lungs in which are filled with smoke, holding beer cans and vodka bottles they run around like wild animals. All with their hoods up they intimidate not just the younger children, but their parents too, before the darkness arrives, the park is empty and only contains the youths who run riot care free. Sitting on the swings and pouring beer down the slide, one of the teens shout â€Å"old bill†! The rest of the thugs launch their alcohol into a nearby hedge and sit like nothings going on. As the odd looking policemen come nearer, one rather tall with beady little eyes and the other short and plump carrying his hat, the teens become anxious but don't show their fear. The policemen are suspicious and search four of the youths while the other five slowly walk away pretending they weren't there, the fat policeman's face screws up and he frowns as he pulls out a packet of cigarettes from the fourteen year old skin heads pocket, he slips them into a bag. â€Å"Oi they're mine† shouts the loud mouthed four foot boy. The policeman take down the kids names and tells them to clear off before they're arrested. The four teens that got searched look glumly at the floor and slowly walk away, looking back at the policemen, scowling viciously as if they don't have anything better to do. They're finally reunited with the other five hood rats that walked away; they all squabble like three year olds about why they walked away. All looking at each other in suspense, a fight breaks out. A bloody nose. A black eye. They never learn.

Defining Literature: Frankenstein vs. Young Goodman Brown

The entire semester defining what Literature is has being the course’s quest. Literature is always changing; its definition has developed and changed from time to time. To find an exact definition of what is literature, it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. There have been several attempts to decipher this puzzle, in â€Å"What Is an Author† written by Michael Foucault, he emphasizes on the idea that an author exists only as a function of a written work. The author's name holds considerable power and serves as an anchor for interpreting a text. And â€Å"On the Sublime† written by Longinus, the writer states that the sublime implies that man can, in emotions and in language, transcend the limits of the human condition. This research paper consists in identifying the elements of literature by comparing two major pieces of work. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley warns that with the advent of science, natural questioning is not only futile, but dangerous. In attempting to discover the mysteries of life, Frankenstein assumes that he can act as God. He disrupts the natural order, and chaos ensues. In â€Å"Young Goodman Brown†, Hawthorne explores the nature of imagination and reality in this mysterious story by allowing the reader to actively question the reality of the night's events. He combines a multitude of elements into it creating a sense of mystery. The short story follows Goodman Brown’s journey resulting in his loss of faith. Literature allows the reader to feel, experience, and inhabit a character or place. It goes beyond the scope of everyday fiction, reaches new insights and allows the writer to reason with the audience. In Frankenstein the monster exemplifies the sublime written by Longinus. Shelley's descriptions of the monster and his actions coincide with Longinus’s definitions and his categories of obscurity, power, terror, difficulty and vastness, each of which facilitate sublime experiences: â€Å"the sources of all the good in us are also the sources of all the bad† (Longinus, 51). Throughout the story the monster attempts to make connections with human beings. During his encounter with the old man, De Lacey, the monster hopes that his disturbing appearance will not be an obstacle to his desire to talk to the old blind man. Without his vision, De Lacey cannot perceive the monster through any means beyond conversation and that works in the monster's favor. De Lacey calls the monster: â€Å"my best and only benefactor† (Shelley, 137), clearly showing that blindness creates the distance between the terrible monster and the man. De Lacey delights in his discourse with the monster, and continues to until the others returned and saw the monster's physical appearance, showing disgust and horror towards him. The monster instills great terror in the human character he encounters, but at the same time evokes feelings of astonishment, empathy, and caring. Longinus’ concept is also showed in Hawthorne’s â€Å"Young Goodman Brown†. The deep dark forest that Goodman Brown enters on his nighttime journey sets the stage for the doubt that consumes his mind for the remainder of his life. However, despite this, the reader witnesses the real ramifications that the events have on Brown's life, which in turn leads them to question the very concepts of imagination and reality. The society in the story strictly follows the rules and principles of its religion. Although Brown believes he is an upstanding person of a respectable family line, he allows his curiosity to betray his faith. Brown arrives late to his meeting with the evil figure and explains that: â€Å"Faith kept me back a while† (Gardner et. al, 4). Throughout the story, â€Å"Faith† represents the figure of his wife and the faith in man and religion. Brown hesitates because he realizes that his journey with this devilish being is sinful. Hawthorne creates a paranoid monster from the once innocent Goodman Brown and the natural setting regresses into an unsafe, unknown forest of evil. In â€Å"What Is an Author†, Foucault addresses the relationship between authors and text, emphasizing their role throughout the stories. From a very early age, Mary Shelley was surrounded by many powerful and influential writers, shaping her ideas as she grew and eventually leading to the writing of Frankenstein. The Romantics of her time were fascinated with dreams and Gothic nightmares which were seen as predictors of what could happen. In order to thoroughly understand the influences that affected Shelley's writing, specifically in Frankenstein, readers must have an adequate knowledge of a few key events in Mary's life. On the other hand, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story is set in the 17th-century colonial American period, specifically in Salem, Massachusetts. According to James Mellow, Hawthorne was plagued by guilt by his grandfather’s role as a judge during this time. He wrote the story to vindicate his grandfather by featuring fictional victims of the witch trials who were witches and not innocent victims of the witch-hunt. Another major theme for both stories is the pursuit of knowledge. In Frankenstein, Victor is absorbed in the creation of the monster; he absents himself from society and forsakes human contact. Frankenstein begins his research with the good intention of helping people, but his thoughts soon turn to the quest for power over life and to be recognized as the creator of a species . He became so caught up in his attempt to create life that he never thought about the consequences: â€Å"Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allow† (Shelley, ). The unlearned creature is thrown out into the world and is forced to discover the hidden meanings behind human life and society, on his own. Similarly, the more that the monster learns about his creation, the more he realizes that he is miserable: â€Å"Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in a disgust† (Shelley, 133). His knowledge, too, causes him immense pain. In both cases, their quest ended in pain, suggesting that this is the inevitable result of the pursuit of knowledge. He reflects: â€Å"O what a strange nature is knowledge! †¦ I wished sometimes to shake off all thought and all feeling† (Shelley, 123). Victor’s isolation is caused by his own greed for knowledge, whereas the monster has no choice, as he is rejected by society. Goodman Brown is a puritan waiting to begin his conversion experience to the Puritan doctrine. Although Goodman Brown was confident when entering into the forest with the devilish being, his temptations cause him to lose faith and become unsure of humanity and nature. However, at the end of Brown’s conversion experience, he is shocked to see that Faith is interacting with the devil because he considers her to be the most pure person in society. Brown describes the fearful nature of the wilderness after proclaiming his faith is gone: â€Å"The whole forest was peopled with frightful sounds – the creaking of the trees, the howling of the wild beasts, and the yell of Indians† (Hawthorne 395). The nature of man continues to be questioned when Goodman Brown experiences total depravity in the forest. He is witness to powerful and religious figures from his society participating in various forms of devil worship and witchcraft. His shock and horror of seeing those he respects as active members of this evil cause him to question his own purity: â€Å"Goodman Brown stepped forth from the shadow of the trees and approached the congregation, with whom he felt a loath full brotherhood by the sympathy of all that was wicked in his heart† (Hawthorne 397). Frankenstein and his creature are a prime example of the burden brought on one's life through incomplete knowledge. The pursuit of knowledge is not necessarily an evil thing, but it can cause destruction when it is pursued beyond natural limits. Victor Frankenstein becomes a slave to his passion for learning in more than one way; first his life is controlled by his obsession to create life, and later he becomes a slave to the monster he has created.

Challenges of Mixing Methods and Methodologies

It is also termed parlance management because supply chain managements deals with material flow control from the raw materials suppliers at one end and delivery of finished goods to the consumers at the other end. The most of these techniques are usually dependent of scientific principles further it's based on mathematical and theories of probability. The inventory management is responsible for various activities like marketing, purchasing, production and other techniques so that it can balance the conflicting tools (Bhasin , 2016) This system is responsible to provide knowledge to manage the flow of materials in an efficient manner, utilize people and equipment effectively and coordinate internal activities. The well managed inventory flow management demonstrates that the customers receive the goods efficiently in proper time. It further allows the members of the team to match the inventory with consumer's demand .Apart from that it is mandatory to meet the objectives of the system including capacity, profitability and productivity. There is some of the basic inventory terms listed:-Cycle stock-It is the basic amount of material required in order to meet the demands of the customer. Transit Stock-It is the reroute among the locations which carry the stock. Speculative Stock-It is basically the extra amount of raw materials required to meet the high consumer needs. It is different than normal short term demand. Safety Stock- It is the extra amount of stock in excess of the cycle stock which is usually maintaine d to compensate the uncertainties of the growing demand and substitution.It can also be expressed through a fixed amount (Coca Cola Journey , 2017) The inventory stock management has a good match with demand and supply further replenishing the requirement of inventory. Various operations such as transporting, manufacturing and warehousing; all these are responsible to generate imbalances in the system which finally gives rise to inventory management especially in FMCG industries. Errors in predicting the consumer demand generally impact the production of the product been produced in the plant. Apart from that changes related to promotional and seasonal impact the consumer demand for any particular product. Hence in these case shortages of the inventory further generate imbalances in the entire system. For eg:- shortage of labor, shortage of transportation.raw materials shortage and capacity of manufacturing constraints ; these all are generally responsible for inventory shortage and the company in such cases is unable to meet demands of the customers (Cahan, 2003) One of the most important parameter of shortage of inventory is scheduling. There are basically three kinds of scheduling problems in the FMCG industries:-First the schedule can be inadequate, second the schedule is not carried out in a proper manner and third the schedule can be disturbed by unexpected scenarios such as bad conditions of weather or breaking of equipments. The efficient inventory management will be trading off the conflicts of operations and constraints of inventory so that it can aim for an effective compromise that maintains enough inventories to meet customer demand yet covers variation in the forecast (Floyd & Fowler, 2009) Inventory is very crucial and it very much mandatory but there are other expenditures associated with the same; and the expenditures increases with the increase in levels of inventory generally when indirect and direct cost is indulged. The bigger the inventory, the higher is the possibility of loss by damage, obsolescence, aging and theft. A bigger inventory can result into inefficient handling. It is always recommended to spend ample amount of time in re-warehousing, double handling and stock rotating through man-hours which may have be crucial for some other task. It is very common factor in FMCG industries to carry manufacturing cost of 25% out of the total amount of funds allocated for inventories. Sometimes the expenditure allocated for inventories can be used elsewhere according to the latest requirement of the industry. Thus it is important for the operations to carry out enough inventories so that it can be always updated with its stock so that shortage scenarios can be avoi ded (Green, 2011) The principle of inventory management states that the industrial plant has good amount of production flexibility and capacity and enough area for storage. The basic quantity required for scheduling and planning the receipt of ingredients, raw materials and supplies packaging must be taken into consideration when estimating and calculating finished product requirement, certain patterns of demand , seasonal swings and activities related to promotional might need pre production specific SKU's in order to avoid capacity of production at bottlenecks. But whenever there is pre production of goods there might be less capacity of storage in the production area. In these scenarios there is a shifting of inventory to the distributing centers based on estimated demands. One needs to note that if the required facility has much capacity of constraints or an unbalanced infrastructure then it's mandatory for the team of management to modify the basic inventory process principle (Helfat & Martin, 20 14) The FMCG industries basically need to be proactive in nature for product recall. The earlier model of business required traceability from individual stores to distribution centers. The recent survey conducted on approximate 48 industries in FMCG sector states that the primary cause for installing an automated control system and material tracking system is to get real time visibility and accuracy of inventory so that it can efficiently track and trace the system of inventory. Further the report stated that 52 percent of the industries now use bar coded labels so that they can keep a track on their raw materials, goods finished and progress of work. In order to monitor raw materials, finished goods in the current scenario; it is mandatory to avoid accidental shifting of materials. To work in the real ambience the companies require the industry need to instantaneously hold the inventories either on SKU's real time expiration control of inventories .This can prevent the expired inventory allocation from entering the other processes .Hence resulting in downfall in distribution chain (Hutchison & Boxall, 2014) The aim of inventory flow management is to match demand with supply on regular time .There are two main methods to manage the flow of inventory most frequently termed as production push and warehouse pull. Production push is regarded as one of the most traditional technique whereas warehouse pull is the new one. At times the system of pull is much suitable to the requirements of the distribution network and beverage industry as it the exact consumer demand the basis for substituting inventory. But for satisfying the demands of the consumers without further interruption a certain quantity of inventory must be send out of the door. In this case the production pull system works very well. Both distribution and production push works very well (Lislie,   2011) In the inventory management production push process the periodic demand estimation is often converted into the production plan and a production schedule. Further the process of push production is further converted into transportation schedule which allocate the amount for transporting to each and every distribution center based on each forecast. In the production push process, the facilities with respect to the production or other elements involving centralized planning generally control and manage the movement of inventory within its distribution centers and location. The push process is generally introduced in the processes during periods of promotion, when the products are supposed to push out of the production area on assigning basis. In the inventory management warehouse pull process, demand forecast is also responsible for the plan of production and modification in schedule of production   on the basis of inventory substitution taking into account distribution center (Metcalf e, 2002) The system of pull in inventory flow management deals with responding to consumer's demand. Here the consumer is considered as a important factor while deciding the requirement, location and amount of SKU's. The push process generally sends out the materials based on the forecasted demands of the market or blanket allocation. The pull system sends out the materials on the basis of the demands of the distribution centers which are directly dependents on consumer's demand. The pull process works under right time principle so that it can conduct quick and frequent flow of info and goods. The cost cutting is usually maintained by replacing waste such as inventory which stays too long or huge amount of safety stocks. The pull system functions better than pull system as it is able to operate and deal with all the complex scenarios of beverage industry by using the technology at optimal level. The pull system of the inventory management is combined with scheduling of production and planning of resource it facilitates the matching of supplies with the actual customer demands within the supply chain again the reversal of planning information from consumers to suppliers (Randolf, 2009) The FMCG industries are making a drastic change by shifting from push system management to pull system inventory management. At the same time there are various factors involved which will lead to success of pull system in future. On primarily basis the industry should have a general knowledge about the pull system .It employees should have a basic idea on operation and estimation during the entire process (Austin & Seitanidi,   2012.) Secondly it's important for the cross over to have a proper commitment by the team of management and prior support by members in the senior management. Thirdly there should be introduction of performance parameters so that it can be established within the line of objectives in supply chain management .Fourth, all the locations should have timely and accurate info about the demands and quantities of inventory management. Fifth, an accurate estimating and forecasting system should be established and the sales and operation tem should be liable to it equally. Sixth, parameters of operations such as lead times, cycle times, and capacities are often required to understand production, warehousing and transport. Seventh, it is mandatory to have accurate info and good communication to solve the complexity of business by indulging software system and finally transportation is required for scheduling the systems (Finegan, 2001) The main preference of all the employees in the FMCG distribution and manufacturing is to satisfy the demands of the consumer for production. Controlling and monitoring the inventory is done in order to match the consumer's demand by scheduling the transportation and productions in a way which can decrease the usage of resources in a complex and constant balance. In order to manage the shifting of materials throughout the entire distribution centers and processing unit they usually develop the ability to meet the changing demands of business. This is further integrated with right policies, system and production. The management of processes and technology are usually done on the basis industrial practices and further by effective achieving the balance of inventory flow management. This leads to a company's success in today's challenging time. Managing the entire material transportation efficiently throughout the processing tenure and distribution of proper Inventory management is a crucial part of the "Seamless tube "within any respective FMCG company. The common focus of this sector is on customer satisfaction. The main goal of this sector is to produce good quality goods at nominal rates further packaged and delivered according to the latest demands of the consumers. Proper management of the inventory flow management ensures that every customer and supplier has uninterrupted delivery of delicious and fresh products of the FMCG company. On the other hand, key factors like the fact that the Bligh Reef, which was the site of the disaster had a number of environmental conditions such as the presence of plant forest and high tidal activities, which were all sources of the accident. The fate of the crude oil, which includes the ability of the oil to evaporate and undergo volatilisation also accounted for the degree of harm that was caused because the air became highly polluted. They think it is ok to text and drive, drink and drive and show their private parts while on spring break. Kids think they should not have to go to school or have a bedtime. Do I have to go on? Bottom line is, they are not paying for a phone, internet, computers, Ipads and the electricity it takes to keep them running and until they do those items are not theirs. My point is, if you’re not doing anything wrong then there should not be a problem with anyone looking at your text messages or emails which by the way are not private anyway. If you feel you should have privacy and you are old enough then get a job, be responsible, and pay for all of your things yourself and you may also want to move out on your own until then, As my mom says â€Å"My house, my rules.† Legally, parents have the right to monitor their childs communications simply because they are legally responsible for the childs actions. Parents are legally responsible for their children. I know of past cases where parents have been arrested for crimes a child has done and they also can be held financially responsible. The trust element also comes into play when both the teen and the parent know they can trust each other that their home is a place free of harmful communication. To do that, the parent has to actively monitor the media that the teen uses and engage in censorship, no matter how awful the word seems. It is simply the act of a responsible society that harmful communication is not displayed to children and that children do their part in respecting the laws of society. I am a teenager. Yet, they share one thing in common: they both happened in Italy. Roma, città   aperta means Rome, open city. This film was directed by Roberto Rossellini. The picture features Aldo Fabrizi, Anna Magnani and Marcello Pagliero. It is set in Rome during the Nazi occupation period. The film won several awards at different film festivals and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. La vita à ¨ bella means life is beautiful. The film was directed by Roberto Benigni, who was also the actor of the hero, Guido Orefice, a Jewish Italian. It is set in the time of WWII and tells the story that lasts for several years. The film was cast at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to win the Grand Prize (festival-cannes.com). At the 71st Academy Awards, the film won awards for Best Music, Original Dramatic Score, and Best Foreign Language Film. Benigni won Best Actor for his role as the funny father. The film also received Academy Award nominations for Directing, Film Editing, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences). First of all, some background information about WWII will be introduced; the part for Italy will be emphasized. The main part will argue on the representation of the period of time in WWII in both movies then contrast the difference in the ways of the representation. British historian Antony Beevor views the beginning of the Second World War as the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in August 1939(Antony Beevor, 2012, p. 10). The exact date of the wars end is also not universally agreed upon. It has been suggested that the war ended at the armistice of 14  August 1945, rather than the formal surrender of Japan (2  September 1945);However, in some European histories, it is said to be ended on 8  May 1945. For the purpose of argument, it is best that the history of WWII concerning the fact of Italy be introduced in this part. The belligerents were basically divided into two sides:Allies and Axis. The Axis comprised mainly of three nations: Germany, Japan, and Italy. In WWII, Kingdom of Italy was allied with Axis countries during 1940-1943. At that time, Italy was controlled mainly by National Fascist Party rule from 1922 to 1943 with Benito Mussolini as totalitarian leader. The fascists imposed totalitarian rule and crushed the political and intellectual opposition. The Fascist regime passed through several relatively distinct phases, says Payne. The first phase 1923-25 was nominally a continuation of the parliamentary system, albeit with a legally organized executive dictatorship. Then came the second phase, the construction of the Fascist dictatorship from 1925 to 1929. The third phase was 1929-34. The fourth phase, 1935-40, was characterized by an aggressive foreign policy, the invasion in Ethiopia, confrontations with the League of Nations sanctions, growing economic autarchy, and semi-Nazification. The war itself (1940-43) was actually the fifth phase, and the final stage was the Salo regime(1943-45) (Stanley G. Payne, 1996, p.212). Another important set of events that is related to the story of La vita à ¨ bella is the Holocaust.The Holocaust was the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, a programme of systematic state-sponsored murder by Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, throughout Nazi-occupied territory(Donald L Niewyk, 2000, p.45). Extermination camps (or death camps) were built to systematically kill millions of victims mainly comprised of Jews by gassing and extreme work under starvation conditions. This genocide of the Jewish people was the Third Reichs Final Solution to the Jewish question.(Franà §ois Furet,1989,p.182) Arguments on the representation Given the background introduced above, we can discuss the representation of period of WWII in the two movies. Analysis of representation At the beginning of the movie Roma, città   aperta, the subtitles tell us about the source of the story: the tragic but moving story that happened during nine months of Nazi Germanys occupation of Italy in 1943. The story begins with the search for a hero named Giorgio Manfredi who was the head of the resistance force. The search by the Gestapo was in vain. After that the scene moves to an office of a German Gestapo. It should be noted that in this scene, there is a man who speaks German while the two men in the room are talking in Italian. This reflects the reality at that timethe city was controlled by both Italian and German authorities, i.e. it was open to foreign invaders. Other details in the film also reflect the reality. For example, this scene is directly shot in the real place. Similar scenes include the street and the old houses made of bricks. The emphasis on the details is the important feature of the film. The story line goes to a tragic part as the hero Giorgio and the priest Don Peitro who helped him were both captured by the Gestapo. Gestapo tried to use Pietros religious beliefs to convince him to betray his cause, Pietro answered that those who strive to help others is on the path of God regardless of their beliefs. They forced Pietro to watch Giorgio being tortured to death. When Don Pietro still refuses to tell Gastapo any useful information, he was executed. The death of the heroes and many other plots in this movie are depicted in a close-to-real style. The purpose of this approach was to tell the truth of peoples suffering under the pressure of Nazi Germany with a very real sense. It looks like part of the actual history although the story and characters are claimed to be unreal. In the movie of La vita à ¨ bella, first of all we know that its the year 1939 and the location is Arezzo, in the central part of Italy. The story begins with a sense of humor in that the brake cant work and the car dramatically drove through a welcoming crowd which was meant to welcome the King of Italy. We can find that people in the crowd give a Roman salute (the gesture adopted by Fascists to express their commitment to the Party and respect for the head of the Party). This sends a signal that Italy was broadly influenced by Fascism. Another important scene in the movie takes place in a school where the Jewish hero Guido pretends to be the inspector from Rome. In the course of the so-called education about the superiority of German races, Guido makes some weird jokes. This is sarcasm of the racism point of view propagandized by Facists. However, this reflects the social reality at that time. At the wedding, there comes an interesting scene: the presentation of Ethiopian cake. Carried by four Ethiopian waiters, the giant cake with an artificial cream ostrich on it was presented to the guests. We should note that the colors of feathers of the tail of the ostrich and those above the waiters hats reflect the fact that Ethiopian was invaded occupied by Italy since white, red and green are the colors on Italys national flag. Several years after the hero and heroine were married; they had a child called Giosuà ¨. Before long, the book store of Guido was shut down due to the racism. Soon after that the Nazi came to capture Guido and his son since they are Jewish people. From this scene, we can find that the Nazi army has actually occupied Rome, indicating that this year is at least 1943.In the scene shown below, the sign reads No Jewish and dogs allowed, reflecting the wide spread anti-Jew atmosphere in Italy. Later in the story, Guido and his son had to live in the extermination camp. The environment was tough but Guido did not want to ruin his sons young mind so he told him a lie about a game, which may win his son a real tank if they succeed in the game. At the end of the story, Guido was killed by a soldier in the camp while his son escaped after hiding for the whole night. In the morning, a funny and inspiring piece of news came: the Allies reached the camp. Giosuà ¨ saw a real tank as he had wished. It should be the year of 1945 since in that year the Allies pushed forward in Italy. Contrast of the Representation Albeit the movie tells two different stories that happened in Italy, the approaches in representation are quite different. The main differences between the approaches of representation lie in two aspects. The first one is the style of telling the story. The second is the configuration of plots.
